About Mrs. Yoast. . .
I am married to 8th grade science teacher, Mr. Yoast. We have two kids, who are juniors this year; Lindsey is a junior at Western State Colorado University in Gunnison and Colten is a junior at MCHS. I spent my time outside of school chasing my kids to different athletic events--I love being there and supporting them! (Before kids, I loved photography, playing softball, knitting/crocheting, sewing quilts, hiking, reading novels, riding, etc.) I just really love all my family--Mom, Dad, brothers, sister, their spouses, kids, and of course my husband and kids. My favorite time--is getting a lot of us together!
I grew up on a farm/ranch in northwest Nebraska and was the 4th of six kids. The community was very small--there were 8 seniors in my graduating class. I went to Chadron State College, where I earned my teaching degree with an emphasis in math. My first teaching job was in Craig at the high school in the fall of 1989. I taught there for 2 years before getting married and moving to Monte Vista, CO for two years. I substitute taught the first year and was an alternative school coordinator/teacher the second year. Our daughter was born in Alamosa.
In 1993, we moved back to Craig where I taught and coached (volleyball & track) at Hayden HS for three years; my husband (who had grown up in Hayden), had a job with CMS. Summer of 1996 my son was born and I took a job at CMS, where I am currently starting my 17th year. I am also starting my 16th year of volleyball officiating. I have taught a couple of summer math classes at CNCC.
I became a teacher because of a HS math teacher that I had--she never gave up on me. I also loved the inner reward I felt when I could help others "get it" in my math classes--I really love helping others succeed. Math really came easy to me. I tutored kids older than me in college and in classes I was taking at the time. I was recommended for the tutoring jobs by my professors. They apparently saw something in me that I didn't, because I didn't make the choice to become a teacher until later in college. After a pretty major surgery at the end of the 1st semester of my junior year, I had to either figure out over Christmas Break what I wanted to do, or I had planned to drop out of college. I chose to continue college and go into teaching...
After graduating, I moved to Pennsylvania to work and learn more about horses on a working horse farm/school. I loved horses and riding (Western), but learned how to ride/jump English--and found I loved it just as much. After walking away from a horrible accident, that as doctors told me I never should have been able to, I was very limited to what I could do on the farm--I was in pretty tough shape for the next 6+ months. So I was put in charge of helping the vet and then helping the injured horses through their recovery process--I loved this! When the babies started being born, I felt like I was in horse heaven! When the year was up, I went back to Nebraska, where the next semester I went back to college to take some more math and computer classes. That next spring and summer I spent working as a hired hand on a large cattle ranch in the middle of the sand hills of Nebraska--working with cattle, haying, etc. I got an interview in Craig, CO and you know the rest of my story!
